REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORD OF BALTZER WIRT-June, 1777
"Capt. Conrad Ritter" Northampton County, Pa
I am a descent of Baltzer Wirt that was mustered as Baltzer Wirt
into the 18 Jun 1777 Rolls of Capt Conrad Ritter at North Hamp;ton, Co,
Pennsylvania, as a private.
He served his time and a few years later received a land bounty
which he took to Ohio after 1810 and invested it in lands of Montgomery
Co,Ohio (that separated off the new county of Butler, then in 1807
Montgomery and Butler severed off another new county the lands that
became Preble Co, Ohio.) Baltzer was not an educated man, he kept a
piece of paper in his pocket to be able to spell his name and when he
lost it or misplaced it he just let the county clerks spell his name
the way he wanted. His name is spelled Balser, Baltzer, Balasar Wert,
Wirt, Wertz, Wirtz, Wirtz, Wirth,
We do not know his age but have a fair idea of it by looking at
the 1800 Northhampton Co PA census which gives his age as being over 45
(born before 1755). After 1845, he applied for a military pension in
Preble co, Ohio and received it, listing his son from his third wife as
the contact person he was living with: Baltzer Wertz Jr married to
Nancy Piles. But on the census of 1850 Balasar/Baltzar Wirt SR is not
in his household. However the state population census was started about
the same time as the Federal cenus, but published in 1851 and it does
have Balasar Wirt SR listed on the 1851 population census (which
handled military pensions, deaths, populations, causes of death). This
is the only information we have regarding his birth and death. This
would make him about 94 to 96 when he died. He was buried in Harrison
TWP, Preble Co, Ohio. He had about 17 children all born in North
Hampton Co, Ohio except for the last two: Baltzer Wertz Jr and George
Wertz which were born in Harrison Co, Ohio.
I am descended from Baltzer Wertz SR (bef 1755 to 1850-1 North
Hampton, PA) via Baltzer Wertz Jr born 1811 Preble Co, Ohio, via his
dau Maria Barbara Wertz born 1834 Preble Co, Ohio (became Mrs Levi
Miller) Ohio, via her daughter Mary Sophia Miller born 1853 Montgomery
Co, Ohio (married James Warren Harris), via her Son Louis Warren Harris
born 1876 Iroquois Co, Illinoia, via his son Warren Deis Harris born
